Microsoft Access vs SQL Server

When Carval HR Unity was initially being developed, it was based on the Microsoft Access database as this made it portable and it was well supported. However, as the product grew along with the size of our customers, we added support for Microsoft SQL Server into the package.

The decision was taken last year to stop selling new systems based on the Access database, for two reasons. Firstly, there were size and speed limitations that were becoming increasingly frustrating for users. Secondly, because appealing to the lowest common denominator, namely Access, was holding us back on development of new features.

HR Unity systems based on Access are still supported for existing customers but those customers should be aware that some of the more complex new features we are adding are going to be "SQL-Server Only" features. The Web self-service module,
HR Unity Online, is already geared almost exclusively towards SQL Server databases.

As new features are added, the limitation of "it won't work on Access" no longer prevents us from making the improvement to the product. Therefore, if this is of concern to you then maybe it is time to think about the alternative. This doesn't mean paying out a fortune for SQL Server, we fully support Microsoft's
MSDE, which is a free and cut-down version of SQL Server but which supports all the clever bits we are starting to make use of.
